Judge William (Bill) Caprathe has the experience and ability to efficiently conduct all types of Alternative Dispute Resolution procedures and is available to mediate in both the Bay City and Livonia offices.
Judge Caprathe spent 15 years as a successful trial attorney prior to being elected to the Bay County Circuit Court in 1980, where he served as chief judge from 1984 through 1997. In 1998 he became president of the Michigan Judges Association and later chaired the State Bar of Michigan’s Judicial Conference. From 2013 through 2016 he was President of the Michigan Retried Judges Association.
He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Section and the section’s Governance Council. He has also been the chair of the section’s Judicial Access Team. Judge Caprathe is also a member of the American Bar Association and its Judicial Division. He chairs the Division’s Joint Committee on Mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution. He is a member of the ABA’s Dispute Resolution Section, and is the Judicial Division’s Liaison to that section.
Judge Caprathe is a certified FINRA Arbitrator, certified Community Resolution Center mediator, certified as a Civil Mediator by the National Judicial College; and is a graduate of the Michigan State Administrative Office’s trainings in Domestic Relations, Domestic Violence Screening, and Child Protection Mediation.
In 2015, Judge Caprathe produced an ABA Webinar, “The Successful Road to Settlement Roundtable” that observed the perspectives of judges, mediators, and litigators regarding judicial settlement conferences, mediations, and how they interact. Judge Caprathe also authored an article, “Hanging Up the Robe; A Transition to Mediation” that was published by the Oakland and Washtenaw County Legal News, and in 2015 the Michigan State Bar’s ADR Quarterly Newsletter.
After serving 30 years on the bench, Judge Caprathe retired at the end 2010. Since then, he continues to sit on assignment, and he conducts mediations and arbitrations. He is an associate of Professional Resolution Experts of Michigan, LLC. (PREMi). His experience covers all the types of cases that come before Michigan Courts and includes conducting many settlement conferences and trials both Jury and non-jury. Judge Caprathe’s experience and training provides him the ability to help litigants understand the strengths and weaknesses of each other’s cases, and work together to find solutions that best satisfy their interests.
He focuses his mediation and arbitration services on: torts, product liability, personal injury, malpractice, contracts, securities, employment, estates and domestic relation disputes. However, he is willing to help parties resolve any type of dispute and travel to where the need exists.
