Judge Jeanne Stempien (retired) was a trial judge from 1993 to 2013 in the 3rd Judicial Circuit Court, the largest trial court in the State of Michigan. Judge Stempien served as Presiding Judge of the Civil Division, the Presiding Business Court Judge, and as a judge in the Family Division. During her time as a judicial officer, she was also appointed by the Supreme Court to serve as a visiting judge on the Michigan Court of Appeals.
Currently, Judge Stempien is a private mediator and arbitrator in pre-suit and pending litigation. In addition to specializing in complex commercial and business cases, Judge Stempien also specializes in handling family and domestic cases in which business assets are involved. Judge Stempien obtained her certification as a civil case mediator from the National Judicial College (NJC). In addition, she is certified from the NJC in general jurisdiction, advanced evidence, financial statements and computer forensics.
As a Circuit Court Judge, Judge Stempien’s duties included serving on the 3rd Circuit Court’s Executive Committee and the Board of Directors for the Wayne County Mediation Tribunal Association. She served as Chairperson on the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission. The Commission conducts investigations of judicial misconduct allegations and is responsible for judicial discipline in the State of Michigan. Judge Stempien was elected by the lawyers of the Michigan State Bar to the Judicial Tenure Commission. Judge Stempien was rated “Outstanding” by the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association.
Judge Stempien received her Juris Doctor degree from Michigan State University Law School (formerly Detroit College of Law), graduating Magna Cum Laude. She received Academic Awards in Real Estate, the Uniform Commercial Code, and Evidence courses. In addition, she was a recipient of the Trustee’s Academic Scholarship.
She received her Bachelor of Arts with Honors for the University of Michigan-Dearborn and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society
Judge Stempien has many years of teaching experience. She taught at the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education, teaching Trial Advocacy courses and seminars. In addition, she also served as a judge for Wayne State University Law School’s Moot Court competition. At the University of Detroit Law School, she was a Master of the Bench for the Inns of Court program. She has also judge numerous Trial Advocacy competitions. Judge Stempien’s civic participation consists mainly of mentoring and teaching law school students and young lawyers but her endeavor went beyond the law. She was the Chairperson of the Schoolcraft College Board of Trustees and served on the Starfish Foundation Board of Directors.
